When Life Hands You Cancer

As a nurse, cancer was something I talked about daily. I had cared for cancer patients on a medical-surgical floor, been part of the ER team delivering life-altering diagnoses, and worked in chemotherapy infusion, helping patients through treatment. I thought I understood cancer until my husband became the patient.

One summer evening in 2023, my husband called me into the bathroom while he was in the shower. He had run out of body wash and asked me to grab a bar of soap from under the sink. As he pressed the soap against his skin, he noticed a lump on his hip. He called me in to feel it, and immediately, my instincts told me something wasn’t right.

An ultrasound showed the mass, but doctors reassured us it was likely a benign lipoma. Still, my gut told me otherwise. I pushed for a biopsy, and that decision changed everything. My husband was diagnosed with Myxoid Liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer.

We were initially told he needed chemotherapy right away, but once again, I felt the need to pause. I insisted on a second opinion at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. There, we met an incredible team who confirmed that chemo wasn’t necessary. Instead, they recommended radiation followed by surgery. My husband underwent weeks of radiation, living away from our family, before undergoing surgery to remove the tumor which had shrunk by over 90%. The procedure required removing part of his glute muscle, and doctors weren’t sure if he would walk normally again. But by the grace of God, he made a full recovery.

Through this experience, we kept asking: Why did this happen? When no one could give us a clear answer, we started looking into the root causes of cancer. What we discovered changed everything. Up to 40% of cancers are preventable due to modifiable risk factors - things we can control. So we began making changes: swapping to less toxic products, incorporating infrared sauna and PEMF therapy, and adjusting our diet.

After going through this process, I realized how little this information is talked about and I knew I had to change that. Now, it’s my mission to educate others on cancer prevention, empower people to take charge of their health, and help create a lifestyle that supports long-term wellness.

Your health is in your hands, and I’m here to help you wake up to that truth.
